Adelaide

A good and bad journey to get here. Easy trip to Heathrow, courtesy of Michelle (wife of nephew Alan).

Check in at Heathrow was good. We'd checked in on-line so it was really just a baggage drop. Security etc wasn't very busy and we were through quite quickly.  After a  bit of shopping we had our usual nice leisurely meal at Chez Gerard. Shops and restaurants very quiet compared to previous years.

We were on the huge new A380. We'd booked lower deck seats, and the internet advice was right - lower deck less than one third full, while upper deck was full - everyone wants the novelty of being upstairs. We had a centre row of four seats to ourselves. Plane very spacious and seating comfortable. Flight was OK until Bay of Bengal, then rest of the journey very bumpy. As we landed Les was airsick for the first time ever.

Fortunately we'd booked a room in the Transit Hotel - very smart and worth the money. We made tea and coffee, had a shower and went to bed for 2 hours' sleep. Just time for another drink and a walk round the new terminal and a snack before boarding the next flight.

These are a couple of shots of the new terminal

Flight to Adelaide from Singapore was much smoother - a smaller plane, virtually full, but only six and a half hours, and we managed to doze a bit.

Adelaide airport was the usual problem - OK getting off the plane, but endless queues to get through immigration and customs. Goodness knows what they'd do if it ever got busy!

Went to get the hire car, and once again would we take a Tarago? (see previous years!). Went back into the airport and a juice and sandwich. Our room at the Jackson was ready, but while we getting sorted Kerine rang. We'd phoned from the airport and she thought we should already be with her and lunch was ready. Went to see her, and had a sandwich lunch.

Went to Burnside Village, and Anne had her green apple sorbet. Sadly for Les the yoghurt bar had gone! Bought some bits and pieces including new SIM card and then returned to Jackson and had a couple of hours sleep. Back to Kerine’s around 5pm – chatted for a while and then had pasta. Chatted for a bit longer and then returned to for an early night (8.30pm).  Not good –people in pool at 3am.

The next few days followed the same pattern. Visit Kerine after breakfast and go somewhere local. Kerine would rest in the afternoon, and then we'd go back in the evening. We needed the rest as well - some disturbed noisy nights didn't help us get over the jetlag.

Highlights - meeting Sheila & Bryon's friends Patsy & Steve, with son Thomas, and taking Kerine to her favourite Cork & Cleaver for a birthday meal.
