St Michaels

We came here as it was roughly midway on our route to Baltimore after the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. In the event, we liked it so much that we scrapped the idea of going to Baltimore, and stayed here an extra night, and went straight back to Washington -Dulles airport the next day (if 'straight' includes missing the airport turn off the Washington Beltway).

We wandered round the old town, took a boat trip on the Miles River and drove down onto Tilghman Island to Black Walnut Point and Lower Bar Neck Point. All very pretty and peaceful. Returned north and then back down the neck of land between Broad Creek and Harris Creek on the 579, right down to Nelson Point.

On our final night we had our second meal at Holy Mackerel, a bar and restaurant next to our motel. After a lovely meal we sat at the bar and had a drink and a chat with some delightful local people. Like most people we met in 'The South', they were charming and very interested in what we'd done. One fisherman had had a very bad day - his boat's fuel tank had split, and after repairing that he'd cut the end off a finger whilst rushing to cut up his bait. He remained philosophical, and could still poke gentle fun at us with a very good attempt at an English accent. Sad to say their fishermen, like ours, are under pressure from fishing restrictions, polluted waters and rising fuel costs.
