An easy flight from Adelaide. Only about two-thirds full, so we had a bank of three seats to ourselves. A bit bumpy going over Indonesia, and they suspended serving food - luckily we'd had ours. |
We arrived early and went straight through the formalities. Loads of time to check into hotel and walk down the river. Lovely sitting outside eating while the sun goes down (and still nearly 30C). |
A good night's sleep was interrupted by Olga phoning at 4.30am to ask if we'd pop round and sort out a problem with her front door. Les called Tracey, who said he sounded like death. When Tracey went round there was no problem! |
A little shopping and walking round
, then off for the Night Safari at the Zoo. While shopping, Anne
popped in for a S$10/10minute haircut. Amazing value (under £4) and
a very good cut. They're so keen on cleanliness that they give you
the comb to take home so that it doesn't get reused. The night
safari was excellent, but very difficult to take stills or video as
the light levels were so low (obviously). Tuesday 7th March was our last full day. Caught the Singapore Airlines hop-on bus to Suntec City, and did the summit tour. This consists of going to the top of Tower 4 for the view. What a view - you're on the 47th floor, 180m up, standing outside on the helipad. Not too terrifying, as the raised area that you're on is smaller than the floor below, so looking over the railings you're only looking at a drop of 10ft or so. Lunch in the huge food court, then back to hotel for a swim and a start to the packing. As it was our last night we went back to Anne's favourite restaurant - the Indonesian BBQ at Riverpoint. We had the platter of grilled fish, cuttlefish, octopus, chicken and assorted satays - see the pic. All for S$38 (£13.50). Add the jug of Tiger Beer, rice etc etc, and the whole lot came to S$75 (£27). Afterwards we took loads of photos - especially of the refurbished area behind Clarke Quay, where the streets have been roofed over with giant umbrella-like structures. Wednesday morning, and off to Changi airport. Writing this Les is sitting in the internet area. Dozens of PCs with free broadband access - but you stand up to use them to discourage people from staying on too long. There are also 15 desks with facilities to plug in laptops - power sockets included, and ethernet cables at some in case you don't have your own with you. It's 10.45, and only two other laptop stations are in use. The internet connection speed is really fast - better than any public access we've ever come across. |
