Back over the Brown Mountain in the fog to Cooma where we visited the Snowy Hydro Visitor Centre. For those who don't know, the Snow Mountains Hydro Scheme is an awe inspiring civil engineering project carried out between 1949 and 1979. Numerous dams, tunnels, pumping and power stations have been built. It provides hydro-electricity and irrigation for most of south east Australia. |
We had lunch in an Austrian restaurant in the hills outside Cooma which gave Les a chance to practise his German. Arrived Jindabyne mid-afternoon. Splendid fully-equipped apartment on lake shore. Shopping and a swim in the pool followed by salad in our room. |
Spent most of Wednesday driving, first to Charlotte's Pass for the best view of Mount Kosciuszko. Back to Jindabyne for shopping and lunch and then a really long drive round much of Kosciuszko National Park, taking in several of the hydro scheme sites including Australia's highest town, Cabramurra. |
Had to retrace our steps partly on Thursday morning on our way to Murray River. This gave us the chance to stop at odd places we'd skipped on Wednesday, including Thredbo and Murray1 Power Station. |
