South of Perth |
We started by driving down south to Busselton - a couple of hours pleasant journey. Interesting to see a new railway line being built down the central reservation of the freeway. We were driving down to stay with Travis and Narelle. Travis is the son of our friends Maureen and Tery in Darwin. He and his wife have two smashing boys - Declan, 3.5 years and Lachlan who is 14 months. Narelle is expecting their third child in May. |
Travis had taken some time off from his job running the restaurant at one of the local wineries. (Driftwood Estate). This meant we were all able to go out together and having the 8-seater was great. They took us on a whirlwind tour of the area south of Busselton, visiting a cheese factory, fudge factory, micro-brewery (Bryon Boyes eat your heart out) and several Margaret River wineries, as well as fantastic coastal scenery. On our second night we all ate fish and chips by the world-famous Busselton Jetty (longer than Southend Pier for our English readers). |
After we left them we continued our tour down south stopping at Pemberton, Walpole and finally Albany before a long day's drive back to Perth. We saw lots of things but the highlight has to be doing the Treetop Walk amongst the giant tingle trees (a type of Eucalypt) at Walpole. 40m up in the air on walkways that are designed to sway - not much video taken as Les was too busy holding on. We also did a tram ride through the karri (another type of Eucalypt) forest at Pemberton. Some of the wineries we saw with Travis and Narelle and later are so smart that they're difficult to describe. Unfortunately, a glitch with a memory card on Anne's new camera meant that we lost the best photos. |
