Thursday 8th July

Another hot sunny day with clear blue sky. Usual start with trip to supermarket before leisurely breakfast. We set off for Le Pouldu to visit the inn where Gauguin stayed after Pont-Aven got too expensive. Couldn’t find it so Dick went into the TIC. Despite what our guidebook said they told us that the museum was only open in the afternoons, so after a quick look at the lovely beach we drove into Quimperlé.

Le Pouldu

We had a much needed drink at a bar (by now it was very hot) before crossing the river and looking at the weekly antique market. Walked into the old part of the town and had lunch at Les Archers where we’d eaten on our last visit. We then went into the church of Sainte-Croix - the only circular Breton Romanesque church - a copy of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. We went into the crypt where Les crawled through the arch of one of the tombs - this is a tradition that is supposed to cure headaches. Presumably the headaches are caused by hitting your head as you crawl through! It didn’t do anything for Les’s knees.

Back to the car and back to Le Pouldu where the museum was open. Spent 45 mins there looking at the inn in general and the recreation of the dining room where Gauguin and others painted the walls, ceiling and windows. Managed to take some surreptitious photos, although strangely the ‘photography forbidden’ sign was at the exit!!

Had a drink at the Hotel de Plage which was the site of the original inn - the current museum is a reconstruction in an adjacent identical house.

Set off for Concarneau, stopping at a supermarket on the way to stock up for the evening. We also stopped at Coromandel Antiques.

Coromandel Antiques

Walked around the old fort in Concarneau before returning home for our usual bread, cheese, ham and salady bits meal. There was actually a short light shower during the evening.
