Tuesday 6th July

Another good night’s sleep. To the supermarket to stock up on bits before breakfast. Walked down to the town centre to buy stamps and post our cards. Then visited the Tuesday market which stretches the whole length of the quay. A complete mixture of stuff, including loads of lovely food - fresh and cooked. They seem particularly fond of spit-roast chicken and pork (both ribs and belly pork). Had a drink in the furthermost cafe on the quay, then walked back through the market. Bought a couple of presents in the town before walking back up to the house.

Pont-Aven

Pam drove us along to Pont-L’Abbe, which seems a long way, but progress is quick on the empty dual carriageways which go everywhere. We had galettes for a late lunch in a small family-run crêperie, where we tried the local beer (Les Trois Matteloids?). Quite like Hoegaarden. We looked around the main church in the town before heading off to the Manoir de Karazan. We looked around the Manoir before having a crepe and drinks in the garden. After this break we walked round the grounds and looked at the art sales and exhibition before leaving around 5.30.

We drove down to Loctudy, stopping at the local Carrefoure to get bread cheese, ham and wine etc for the evening. Anne saw a really cheap Sam Barton Canadian Whisky, so Dick & Pam agreed to bring it back in the car when they return to England. We drove down to the harbour at Loctudy, before returning via Pont-L’Abbe to the lovely little town of Benodet. Went into the local Church where they were setting up for a concert that evening (starting at 9pm!). Home to Pont-Aven, and saw a bad accident just outside the town that had obviously just happened - no emergency services on site, but other drivers had everything organised. A very badly damaged car, and a fountain of water going 15ft into the air. We assume the car had hit a hydrant. Lots of people looking shocked and dazed but nobody seemed badly injured - a good job too as it seemed to be ages before we heard any sirens.

Our standard evening meal of bread. cheese and ham, with a dessert of some lovely sweet melons that we’d bought. What could be nicer.
